On Wednesday Kendrick Lamar headlined his second SOLD OUT New York City show. His first Southpaw show earlier this summer was a huge topic of discussion that whole month but when the date for his SOBs show was announced, fans wondered if he would top his previous set. Between the Southpaw show and SOBs, Kendrick dropped his album Section.80 and was featured on the bill for The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, but we were all disappointed when his set was cut short & he was unable to perform any cuts off the album.
Now fast forward to August 31st, right after Juelz Santana & Lloyd Banks helped Trav finish up his opening set; Lowkey from UHTN [who hosted the show] interacted with the crowd while about 350 people waited in anticipation for Kendrick to hit the stage. It didn’t take too long for Ali to get to the DJ booth and set up and soon enough he cued “The Heart Part 2” and everyone knew what time it was. Kendrick made his way through the stuffy crowd of avid fans and opened the show with arguably one of his deepest songs off of his mixtape, Overly Dedicated.
When he reached about three songs in, you could see the surprise on his and everyone else on stage’s face when they noticed that before he would even start spitting, his lyrics echoed through the entire venue. It seemed that the audience knew EVERY word to EVERY song which ranged from cuts from The Kendrick Lamar EP to freestyles to Section.80 & Overly Dedicated. He even mentioned that the love he felt from the NYC crowd felt like he was back at home in Compton.
That’s real.
K.Dot performed various tracks which blended brilliantly with his set which included a self-illustrated dialogue between his parents talking to him when he was a child & how it influenced his music.
The most memorable moments for me had to be the performance of “A.D.H.D,” “Rigamortus”(where Ali “mistakenly” played the wrong version which led to them previewing the remix which features Busta Rhymes), “Tammy’s Song” (where he singled out a girl in the crowd asking if she had a boyfriend. But when she said no, he accused her of lying and dedicated the song to her while the whole crowd chanted the lyrics in her direction), “Look out for Detox,” “Chapter 6,” “Michael Jordan” & of course he closed the show with “HiiiPower”. I’ll post some links below so you can relive the show and see why you should make sure you don’t miss the next one.
& Shoutout to the homie Potential on that MTV RapFix video at the top.
