this project was recorded mid to late last year after i found out about this guy named suff daddy and was put in touch with his label (mpm) thanks to the homie jon kim. i went back n forth with the label via email for a while then the conversation just kinda stopped. i waffled about releasing it and finally decided that it was too good not to share. the songs are relatively old and they deal with my lows and highs and everything in between. the title comes from just becoming a whole different person over time, sorta like a doppelganger of yourself. that feeling that you get when you look in the mirror and dont really know the person looking back at you even though they look just like you. our lives change us incrementally on a daily basis so after a few jarring experiences one day we all lose who we were to become who we are. thats life right? you change it or it changes you. - Donwill

Early morning Sunday edition. So, you know, just got off work & sh*t, and I'm in the crib, laid back w/ that Moon & Stars Rmx on repeat, casually browsin' through old shit, and I came across this. S/o Copa for blackin' at the end re-up'n the link. I'd never heard it prior to now.

The homie Donwill decided to finish the "heaven" verse off of Kendrick Lamar's Heaven & Hell track. I couldn't think of too many other MCs more suitable for the task. Here's what he had to say about Kendrick Lamar's latest project, O(verly) D(edicated):

The homie Datwon Thomas didn’t tell me to listen to Kendrick Lamar. He literally commanded me to. Told me that I’d love it and to set any criticism I’m seeing online about his voice* aside. I think I got his shit that night and played it like three times in a row. It’s one of my default lps now. You know the kind you throw on when you don’t know what else to throw on aside from what genre you want to hear?

The song I linked is not a dedication to Kendrick’s album. Its me adding a verse to the end of the a song off of the album. The song is named Heaven or Hell and I swear one day I had this shit on repeat for like 30 minutes. So long that when I finally cut it off I just kinda started writing a verse to fill in the blank at the end. This was purely for personal consumption mind you but I figured what the hell, I may as well share it since I haven’t put out any music in a while.

I named it “Buy Kendrick Lamar’s O.D.” because well, its not my song. I just felt moved to write to it and figured if I’m going to put it out into the world I may as well give the brother his promo. This ain’t my song, its his. I’ve never even met the guy*** but I can say he has a fantastic album out for sale that you should buy if you looking for new music.

I agree with Donwill about how critiquing Kendrick's voice is "the dumbest critique EVER… just fucking dumb".

Sitting down with a camera crew from MYX TV’s show DIG, Donwill discusses what the album means to him, and the inspiration that he derived from the film “High Fidelity,” based off of Nick Hornby’s novel. “The movie itself always inspired me, aside from the angle of love, but just the angle of music being such a formidable character in my life. I look at that movie as a framework to adapt my story to,” he tells the interviewer, explaining the impact that this comedy/drama/romance flick starring John Cusack has had not only on his music, but on his life.
