“When you making an album, at least in my case, I had songs that I’ve had for three years that I’ve been holding on to that I wouldn’t put on The Warm Up or any mixtape, because I felt they were too good. And over the years, some of them turned into, ‘Oh, I can let that go, because I’m better than that now.’ But there’s been songs, or there are still songs, that will make the album that never left. You come into the album with that stack of records, and slowly, as you make more, you can see which of those can fly off. And it’s hard, because they’re all incredible songs, and you don’t want to let any go. Now we’re down to maybe three. They can never go. They have to stay.”
“This is my first video,” the Young Money franchise player said, sitting in his trailer. “I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist. Shooting the other videos I’ve done has been great. I really don’t care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I’ve learned a lot from them. Today, I’m shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I’m shooting with Anthony Mandler.”
“It was super easy. I did it in two days. Lasers was almost all done… the super ‘I’m the best MC’ — lyrical — there’s wasn’t really room for that on this album. I was like, ‘Let me give my fans that. Let me let them know that I’m still capable of that. Let me show MTV I’m hot too.’ Kept it short. I felt, if you’re nice, you don’t need an hour. You don’t need one hour and 35 minutes. You don’t need 100 freestyles every week. You need a nice demonstration of what you’re capable of doing very effectively, and you step back. Leave you wanting more. Sometimes the best part of the movie is the trailer.” - MTV.
He also discusses part 2 of The State vs. Radric Davis series, called “The Appeal” dropping in April 2010. He says that he finished recording it and that it’s getting mixed and mastered. When he gets out he plans on recording part 3, “The Final Verdict,” and dropping it in December of next year.
"The album opens up with a song I'm really proud of called 'Fireworks,' " he told us. " ... I get asked so many questions. Due to press people around, I have to deflect them. It's like when you put in the CD, all your questions are answered right away. It's a great, triumphant record right away. That opens up the scheme, and from there, hopefully, it's a colorful journey for everybody."
